A diverse group of small to medium-sized creatures, predominantly terrestrial but also including some aquatic species, characterized by their segmented bodies, jointed limbs, and chitinous exoskeletons, and constituting a major class within the arthropods. This class also shares certain biological and evolutionary links with the Holocephali, a subclass of cartilaginous fish, and amphibians, a group of cold-blooded vertebrates, under the larger umbrella of the animal kingdom.
